Blood Cancer Awareness Month

Since 2010, September has been designated as National Blood Cancer Awareness Month.  Leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neoplasms are all considered blood cancers that can affect the bone marrow, blood cells, lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system.  This month is an important month to increase public awareness of blood cancers, including screening, prevention, treatment options, and available resources for them.  Staying informed with the latest news on these diseases is critical in reducing your risk of developing leukemia or lymphoma or achieving the best possible outcome from treatments.

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, there is someone in this country that is diagnosed with a blood cancer approximately every 3 minutes.  There are many different types of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.  And approximately every 10 minutes, a person loses his/her life from a blood cancer.  Fortunately, five-year survival rate has increased significantly from the 1960s, largely due to improvement in treatments.  Research has allowed for greater understanding of different treatments for each subtype of blood cancers, which is why accurate diagnosis is critical.
