Tips for Men’s Health

Men’s Health Month has passed, but that doesn’t mean its less important! See what all the hype is about for the MHM by browsing our last article.

It’s always a good time to think more critically about health and healthy habits. Men aren’t always proactive about their health. Since studies show that 1 in 3 males will be affected by cancer in their lifetimes, it’s time for them to take charge. Most risk factors for diseases, such as cancer, can be controlled and changed based on our lifestyle choices. Body weight, diet, and physical activity are the three most common factors that affect our long-term health. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, estimates show that about 20% of all cancers diagnosed in the US are related to higher levels of body fat, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition. These conditions are easily prevented by lifestyle change. You are the captain of your ship!

In terms of our health, there are several little things we can do every day that will help tend the path to a healthy, cancer-free lifestyle. These seemingly small adjustments to our daily lives have major impact when it comes to the bigger picture. Here are some ways that you can take matters into your own hands!  They are Savor Health approved!

  • Eat Plenty of Color! – Not only are there several cancer fighting foods, but the more color you introduce into your diet (mainly through fruits and vegetables, your obtaining and maintaining more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Consume More Plant Proteins. – Try to limit your animal proteins to 3 times a week. Food like grilled firm tofu, bean and veggie burgers, quinoa and ancient grains should be consumed more often than animal proteins, like steak, chicken and milk.
  • EXERCISE! – 150 minutes per week (30 minutes per day, 5 times per week), of running, biking and hiking are great ways to get your heart rate up and increase overall stamina.  Exercising can even be as simple as walking at lunchtime, cleaning the house, or doing yard work.  Be sure to keep a log of your workouts too so you can see how you progress!
