Fall for New Flavors: Allspice

If you are looking for a unique and versatile spice, allspice is for you! This spice can be used in both savory and sweet dishes, providing a warm flavor to any meal.

Nutrition Content and Health Benefits

One tablespoon of allspice provides fiber and vitamin C [i]. The allspice berries contain eugenol, which has traditionally been used as a pain reliever [ii]. In folk medicine, allspice has been used in tea for colds, menstrual cramps and upset stomach [iii].

How to Use

Ground or whole allspice can be used in baking, as well as in meats, rice and pickling [iv]. Physically, whole allspice berries appear similar to black peppercorns. However, the flavor is closer to a blend of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg [v]. You can try replacing allspice in recipes that call for these three ingredients!

Instructions
  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over high heat and add the onion. Sauté until the onions are translucent, then add the garlic and sauté for another minute.
  2. Add all the remaining ingredients in (spices and sugar snap peas), except the shrimp. Sauté these ingredients for another minute to mix the spices in with the vegetables.
  3. Finally, toss in the shrimp and sauté until the shrimp is coated in the spices. If the shrimp is pre-cooked, this will be about 30 seconds to a minute. If the shrimp is not pre-cooked, sauté for about 2-3 minutes, or until the shrimp is fully cooked.
  4. Serve alone or over rice!
