Thanksgiving Recipe Ideas

Savor Health would like to share some delicious AND healthy recipes for the Thanksgiving feast.

One side dish that you’re sure to find on everyone’s table is mashed potatoes, which are traditionally made with whole milk and butter.  Here’s an alternative mashed potato dish that uses healthy fats and garlic.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
  1. 1 ¼ pounds of Yukon gold potatoes, unpeeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  2. 4 large cloves of garlic, peeled and quartered
  3. ½ cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  4. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  5. ½ teaspoon salt
  6. ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions
  1. Place the potatoes and garlic in a steamer basket fitted over a large pot of boiling water. Cover and steam until the potatoes are knife-tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Warm the chicken broth in a small pot on the stove or in a glass container in the microwave.
  2. Remove the steamer basket and drain the water from the large pot. Transfer the potatoes and garlic to the pot, add the oil, salt, pepper, and broth and mash until smooth.

Of course, let’s not forget about all the desserts.  This recipe for Apple Pie vegan and packed with fiber rich oats and apples.  

Easy Vegan Apple Pie
Ingredients
  1. 4-5 Granny Smith apples, cored and thinly sliced
  2. 1/3 cup vegan margarine, softened
  3. 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  4. 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  5. 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  6. ½ cup oats
  7. 1 pre-made 9-inch pie crust

Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 OF.
  2. Place the apples in the crust. Dot with half of the vegan margarine. Stir the rest of the margarine into the brown sugar, oats, and spices, and crumble this mixture on top of the apples.
  3. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until apples are very soft when pierced with a knife.
